BMW F97 X3 M / F98 X4 M VANTA GOLD™ Exhaust System
Developed specifically around the packaging and acoustic characteristics of the F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M, this VANTA GOLD™ system takes the sound philosophy established on our M3, M4, and M2 applications and re-engineers it for the larger S58 platform. While the engine family is shared, the longer exhaust path and different underbody architecture of the X3 M and X4 M required a different approach to pipe diameter, resonance control, and rear-section design.
The system begins with a dual 3-inch architecture, increasing the main exhaust diameter from the factory approximately 2.75-inch layout. The larger cross-section is designed to reduce restriction and create additional flow capacity for both factory-power vehicles and higher-output S58 builds. Rather than simply making the piping larger for volume, the complete system is designed around maintaining exhaust velocity and controlling how pressure waves move through the longer exhaust path. This produces a fuller, more developed tone while providing additional headroom as power and boost are increased.
At the center remains the defining technology of the VANTA GOLD™ series: the AURUM FLOW CORE™. Manufactured through advanced 3D printing, its internal geometry allows exhaust pulses from the two sides of the S58 to interact through carefully formed crossover paths that cannot be reproduced with a conventional fabricated X-pipe. Instead of relying on a simple intersection, the core is designed to progressively manage pulse interaction, pressure balance, and harmonic behavior as exhaust velocity rises.
The AURUM FLOW CORE™ works as more than a conventional crossover or resonator. Its purpose is to hold the sound together. As the S58 moves through the rev range, unwanted frequencies can become increasingly pronounced, particularly once exhaust restriction is reduced. The Flow Core is designed to organize this interaction, retaining the desirable frequencies while controlling the metallic rasp and harmonic breakup that can make an aggressive S58 exhaust sound uncontrolled. The core is finished in the signature VANTA GOLD™ heat-resistant coating, providing additional thermal protection while giving the system its unmistakable visual identity.
For the X3 M and X4 M application, we have added two dedicated resonators downstream of the Flow Core. Their purpose is not to mute the character of the system, but to address the lower-frequency resonance, air rattle, and harshness that can occur at low engine speed and during transitions in load. Working together with the AURUM FLOW CORE™, the resonators help calm these unwanted frequencies before the exhaust reaches the rear section. At lower RPM, this creates a deeper and more composed tone; as engine speed increases, the system is allowed to open acoustically and develop the cleaner, more exotic upper-register character associated with VANTA GOLD™.
A Completely Redesigned X-Pipe Axle-Back
The rear section represents one of the largest departures from a conventional X3 M or X4 M exhaust. Rather than terminating the midpipes into a traditional muffler layout, the VANTA GOLD™ axle-back incorporates an additional rear X-pipe architecture before the signature quad outlets.
This secondary crossover creates another controlled point of interaction between the two exhaust paths, helping balance flow immediately before the gases exit the system. Acoustically, it contributes to a smoother and more unified exhaust note, particularly during rapid changes in engine speed. Instead of the two banks sounding isolated from one another, the rear crossover helps create a more continuous, cohesive sound from all four outlets.
The axle-back itself has also been developed with weight reduction and simplified flow routing in mind. The result is a visually distinctive rear architecture that retains the unmistakable quad-tip identity of the X3 M and X4 M while replacing the conventional rear muffler arrangement with something considerably more focused and performance-oriented.
Every section is precision formed, fitted, and TIG welded with careful attention given to alignment, joint transitions, hanger position, valve placement, and final outlet symmetry. VANTA GOLD™ is not intended to be a mass-produced exhaust with a special center section added to it. The complete system is engineered as one acoustic and airflow package.
Valve Control
The rear valved architecture provides two distinctly different personalities. Customers may retain factory valve control and allow the BMW drive modes to operate the system, or configure the exhaust with the Yonristic Performance remote valve controller for independent valve operation.
With the valves closed, the system maintains greater control during everyday driving and highway cruising. With the valves fully open, exhaust flow becomes considerably more direct, revealing the full dual 3-inch VANTA GOLD™ character and allowing the S58 to deliver its most aggressive sound.
Sound Characteristics
Low RPM: Deep, substantial, and controlled, with the dual resonators working to reduce low-frequency harshness and air rattle.
Mid RPM: Fuller and more aggressive, with increasingly pronounced S58 character and improved harmonic balance.
High RPM: Clean, sharp, exotic, and tightly structured rather than metallic or broken.
Valves Closed: Refined for everyday use and longer-distance driving.
Valves Open: Maximum VANTA GOLD™ sound, airflow, and presence.
Estimated Performance Gains
The dual 3-inch architecture is designed to reduce downstream restriction and provide greater flow capacity, particularly on modified vehicles where exhaust volume increases substantially.
VANTA GOLD™ Cat-Back
Estimated horsepower gain: approximately +8–15 HP
Estimated torque gain: approximately +10–25 lb-ft
These figures are intentionally conservative planning ranges rather than guaranteed dyno figures. For context, published testing of premium F97/F98 exhaust systems has shown measurable naturally aspirated exhaust gains on the S58; Akrapovič reports roughly +7.3 to +12.1 hp depending on application/model year, with torque improvements also recorded.
The real advantage of the dual 3-inch architecture becomes increasingly relevant as boost, tuning, and turbo output rise, where the additional flow capacity provides substantially more headroom than the original exhaust system.
VANTA GOLD™ MaxFlow Downpipe Packages
For customers looking to build the exhaust as a complete S58 flow package, VANTA GOLD™ is available with multiple Yonristic Performance downpipe configurations.
MaxFlow Free-Flow Downpipes provide the least restrictive configuration and are intended for track/off-road applications where permitted.
200-Cell MaxFlow Downpipes provide a high-flow catalyst option for customers seeking a balance between additional flow and catalytic treatment.
400-Cell MaxFlow Downpipes offer a more refined catalyst configuration while still reducing restriction compared with the factory system.
Downpipes provide considerably greater power potential than a cat-back alone because the factory catalysts sit immediately downstream of the turbochargers. Published S58 F97/F98 aftermarket testing has reported approximately 30 whp / 35 wtq from high-flow downpipes alone, with substantially larger gains possible when paired with ECU calibration.
Actual output depends heavily on catalyst configuration, ECU calibration, boost level, fuel, supporting modifications, and dyno methodology.
